9th Thought: APC Fights Against Smoking

Dear reader, do you smoke cigarettes? You know what? Cigarette smoking is not cool at all. It has many negative effects on your body and on those people around you. This is why there are laws on cigarette smoking in different countries that should be followed by their citizens.

It has been stated in the law of the Philippines, Republic Act No. 9211 also known as the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003, that smoking is prohibited in any public vehicle school premises, office building, mall interiors and government offices. Moreover, people can only smoke in designated smoking areas. Every said location follows the law; and my school Asia Pacific College has an anti-smoking campaign that is conducted throughout each academic year.

Inclusive of the campaign are the rules and regulations on smoking. It states that students, faculty and staff are not allowed to smoke cigarettes inside the school building but can exhibit such activity at the open parking lot. Also included within are the smoking seminars held in APC every academic year to enlighten students with the risks of smoking cigarettes.

I greatly applaud APC for having such campaign because I believe that people should not smoke. Smoking has its own health risks and is similar to drugs: Once you started smoking and got addicted to it, you don’t know when and how to stop. Cliché but true. Due to this fact, APC does everything that it can to discourage students who have not yet tried smoking to try it and be one of those smokers around the country.

I’m pleased that APC is strict with its law on smoking. This is because its law on smoking promotes discipline and health safety to everyone within the school. Besides, it would be disappointing for visitors if a pleasant college building stinks of the odor of cigarettes, right? APC has a good name already and it would be saddening if its name will be ruined just because of smoking cigarettes.

I hope APC will find more ways to lessen people who smoke within its premises. This is because I want the people in the academe to have low risks of deadly lung diseases. Also, I have weak lungs and a simple lung-harming agent might push my body to its dead end. Therefore, I highly hope that APC will be a smoking-free institution.
